Tori's "Boys for Pelé" changed my mind, itīs probably the most difficult album to getting thru Toriīs music, but i saw Toriīs unplugged and inmediatly buyed the album!
After this album, my mind was open to listen Fiona, and lately, Aimee, till i listen "lost in space", the album that definetly caught me!
I love both, Aimee most, each album is better than the last, and about Tori, "Strange little girls" was a little dissapointing for me, but again, "Scarletīs Walk" get me back, definetly is the best album from Tori.
By the way, now that both albums will be in the stores this year, itīs another chance to compare them, well, but i donīt know, both are specials, greats...

My Thoughts on the Beekeeper

I know I'm being overly critical, but this is mostly for my own benefit -- I want to write out what I think of this album, since many people are speaking negatively of it. I would post it on a Tori forum if I frequented one...

Parasol - When I come to terms, to terms with this, my world will change for me
This is the first song I heard on this album, besides the singles. It's just gorgeous. Tori said it's inspired by a painting she saw. I heard this song first when someone sent it to me online, and I couldn't resist but listen to it. When I got the album, I was surprised that it was the first song on the album. I wouldn't have chosen it for a first track, but, when analyzed, it does seem to set a good mood for the album. Really, this song is so beautiful. The backing vocals [which Tori used so much on 'Scarlet's Walk', are evidently still around. I love the visuals this song gives me personally, of just someone waiting and just sitting down. It affects me muchly. A-

Sweet the Sting - Love, let me breathe, breathe you in, melt the confusion, until there is you
Um, wow. I did not think I would like this one. I remember going to Tori's website before the release of the album and hearing a snippet of this song by mistake, and I was just floored by it's gorgeousness. The choir. WOW. It's just breathetaking, just like in 'Way Down' from 'Boys for Pele'. I love the lyrics, how it seems to tell such a haunting story, but the song itself isn't haunting, just beautiful. It is slightly eerie though, somehow, I can't explain it. Tori stated that this song is about temptation, how when we get what we want, we also have to pay for it somehow. Just marvelous, and a wonderful song to put at such an early part of the album. A

The Power of Orange Knickers - Can somebody tell me, now... who is this terrorist?
I didn't like this one when I first heard it, but now I do. Damien Rice's vocals go so well with Tori, and Tori's sound even more beautiful this time. A song unlike anything Tori has ever done before, but for some odd reason reminds me of 'Agent Orange' [pun not intended]. Really, a very pretty song. B+

Jamaica Inn - With the gales by little boat was tossed, how was I to know that you'd sent her with a lantern to bring me in?
Gorgeous... this song is so gorgeous. It totally gives me a feel of where it takes place. Tori stated how it's about how the pirates used to attack ships that docked off of the Cornish coast, and she sings the line I woke up to find the pirates have come. It's just a beautiful song, very surprising. A

Barons of Suburbia - Baby I would let your darkness invade me
Reminds me a lot of 'Carbon', from 'Scarlet's Walk', especially the beginning piano. Quite a change in pace, and very surprising, still. Tori says this song is about fake friends and people, and really, it's quite obvious to tell that it is, unlike most of Tori's songs. The ending is particularly the most effecting part for me, especially when she wails She is risen, boys! She is risen!. It's really a taste of "Old Tori", which is nice. B+

Sleeps with Butterflies - Balloons look good from on the ground, I fear with pins and needles around we may fall then stumble
The 'radio' single. When I first heard it, I despised it. Now, I like it, especially the chorus. Quite formulmatic, actually, but it's quite gorgeous if you get past that fact and the cliched, baffingly unlike-Tori like I'm not like the girls that you've known but I believe I'm worth coming home to. Still, I'm so surprised as to how much I appreciate this song now. I don't know why, I can't pinpoint why I think it's pretty and [somehow!] unique, but it is. B+

General Joy - Could it be the hawks are protecting us from the men who have now assumed their name?
A pretty jazz-influenced song, and the first song which isn't too good in my opinion. The whole lines about giving sorrow's dress to happiness is so very Tori, which is nice. The song suffers from repition, I believe, when the repeated parts aren't too thrilling or special. I do enjoy the jazz-influenced part at the beginning of the verses quite a bit. Tori's vocals are also quite pretty at the quiet parts. C+

Mother Revolution - You could've had me, boy, right there beside you
A second weak song, probably the worst on the album possibly. The gospel choir, which is breathtaking on 'Sweet the Sting', shouldn't have been in this song. Honestly, the only part I love on this song is the repition of You could've me right there beside you. Pretty affecting. C-

Ribbons Undone - She runs like a fire does, just picking up daisies
A song dedicated to Tori's daughter. I was expecting more from it, it's quite beautiful really, but, I don't know. The backing vocals are quite beautiful, really, as is the ending, but just not too affecting for me I believe. C+

Cars and Guitars - I've even curved this body to fit your bow
Woah. Didn't expect this. Tori making that 'chachahchahcha' sound is just... wonderful. The keep on driving refrain is alarmingly similar to the I'm glad you're on my side from 'Taxi Ride'. Anyway, what a glorious song. So beautiful, I just couldn't stop smiling when I first heard it. Surprisingly unique. A

Witness - You left me burning in your petrol emotion
Eek. Tori and the choir sings so fast in this song. It's not really too great, really, but.. I don't know. I don't have much of an opinion on this song, I usually forget it. The slower part near the end though is gorgeous.
C

Original Sinsuality - Yaldaboath, Saklas, I'm calling you. Samael, you are not alone
When Tori sings the part I have quoted above, just try not to get chills. A-

Ireland - I let him wake me but decided not to stay
This song gives the totally perfect feel of driving on a sunny day [I assume in Ireland, never been there]. I like it a lot, surprisingly. I think it's gorgeous, especially the background voices. B+

The Beekeeper - In your gown with your breathing mask, plugged into a breathing mask, as if you ever needed one
What a line. This song has some of the best Tori lyrics ever. The song, you can tell, and I've read, is about the protagonist, speaking to the Beekeeper, to try to get her to let her mother live. It's such a haunting, eerie song. Wow. A

Martha's Foolish Ginger - If those harbour lights had just been a half a mile inland, who knows what I would have done
I've kind of been playing this song on repeat for awhile. It's just so gorgeous. Martha's Foolish Ginger is a boat, and this song took Tori 6 years to write. The line I quoted just blows me away. The song this story tells is so intruging, I wish I could put it all together somehow. A

Hoochie Woman - My head was in the book, his hands were on her everywhere
I don't understand if this song is supposed to be funny or not. It's interesting... B-

Goodbye Pisces - Is that all I am, just a doll you got used to?
I didn't expect to like this one either, but it's pretty gorgeous. It's kind of like the perfect breakup song. I prefer the verses really, quite pretty. A-

Marys of the Sea - Les Saint Marie de la Mer, we will dance your ring
Quite a different song, very nicely done. Tori said it's about the gospel of Mary Magelane, which is kept private from the masses for some reason. It's really an affecting song, when I first heard it I was very moved. A-

Toast - I thought it was harvest time, you always loved the smell of the wood burning
Best song on the album. So damn eerie, gorgeous, sad. I don't know what it's about but it's just so amazing. I love it, Tori's vocals are just so mindblowing here. What a way to end the album. A

Even after all that rushing around, where we've ended up is the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. And maybe knowing isn't the point. Where we're standing right now, in the ruins in the dark, what we could build is anything.

Alan, wow!! I couldn't stand "General Joy" the first time I heard it. Now I love it. We are twins on different coasts! heh.

I dont like the album as a whole, though :\ I'd like to try out the later songs. I dont own it; I only stream it from msn.

Wow, that's quite a coincidence!

I look forward to hearing your more detailed thoughts on each song, if you do get around to it.

hmmm...

Well, like the rest of you, I didn't like it at first, but some of the songs stayed in my head so I had to keep listening. I think the same thing happened with Scarlet's Walk. I've always been a big Boys for Pele fan, so I like The Beekeeper (song) best, with Goodbye Pisces and Toast close in the running. I always like the sad, dark songs best. I agree that there is a lot of repetition in many of the songs on the album. I read somewhere that Toast was about her brother Michael dying. He is also referred to in The Beekeeper (song). The way the song switches from the electronic beat to just her simple voice, and then back to the dark electronic sounds is very moving. It reminds me of the electronic mix of Hey Jupiter, one of my favs. Its probably not my fav album of hers (I don't think anything will top Boys for Pele) but its still good and I understand that as an artist grows so does their music. It would be nice if she could just go back to the basics though. I did like the choir on Sweet the Sting. That was cool.
